Discovering The Artist Inside You

It’s hard to find a child who doesn’t love drawing outside with chalk, playing make-believe with friends, singing along to music, or finger painting. Experts say it’s fundamental to their growth and development as a whole because it helps with self-expression, cognitive function, and emotional wellbeing. So, if we all enjoyed it and it was good for us, why did we stop doing it as we got older?

What Happens to Creativity as We Age

At some point, everyone was taught something that limited their creativity. Whether it was a teacher who told you “paint between the lines” or someone who said “no, don’t do it like that,” the adult value for knowledge and expertise combined with the ego’s need to look good replaced our once-favorite pastime for something else.

Owner and Instructor, Anjl Rodee, says “We were built to create. No reason for it. Our brains are built to create simply because we like to. It’s innate, nonthreatening, and meditative.”

But the truth is, we never fully lost that creative spark. It’s still there, like it has been all along, just waiting for you to explore the wonders of having fun for fun’s sake. At BrushCapades, our goal is to deconstruct this old way of thinking.

Unlocking Your Artistic Spirit

With every class, Anjl aims to create a safe and encouraging environment without fear of judgment. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to do something. Even if she’s teaching a group of people how to paint the same flower, she encourages you to make it your own. After all, if Van Gogh and Andy Warhol were sitting in the same class, they wouldn’t paint something that looked the same – and that’s what we want.

Since starting BrushCapades over 8 years ago, sharing this important message has become just as important as the art itself. We’re excited to announce that this mission has now extended beyond the studio! Anjl is now available to be booked for speaking engagements and destination events, specializing in topics from creativity and self-kindness to humor in the workplace, she reminds her audience the joy it is to simply be human. It’s Easier Than You Think

In many ways, adults are prisoners of their own success: stick to what you know, get results, and impress other people. The second we let all of that go, however, is when we feel the most free. Have you ever slowed down long enough to ask yourself, with all those things stripped away, “What do I enjoy doing?”

It’s surprising how easy it is to step out into the unknown, unpredictable territory of your own creativity when you connect with your imagination. Maybe it takes a little encouragement, a deep breath, or feeling funny for the first 20 minutes… but as they say, starting is the hardest part. But don’t just take our word for it! See what other people had to say after they took their first BrushCapades class:
